Saint James the Greater Church

The Roman Catholic Filialkirche Eisenberg an der Pinka stands in the small village of Eisenberg on the Pinka river in Burgenland. It belongs to the parish of Deutsch Schützen and is dedicated to Saint James the Greater. The church is listed as a protected monument and lies east of the village beside the cemetery. The building began in 1750 under master builder Jakob Wurch from Rechnitz. In 1936 the church was enlarged by adding a transept, a new sanctuary and two sacristies. A hall for lying in state was added to the north sacristy in the 1970s. The tower, with its eight-sided pyramid roof, holds the main entrance and four louvred openings. Inside, the nave has a barrel vault with lunettes above two round-headed windows. The organ loft rests on supports above the entrance. The transept is covered by a flat wooden ceiling. On either side are small choir lofts reached from the sanctuary, which is slightly raised and ends in a shallow apse. The baroque high altar dates from around 1750 and features Corinthian pilasters and free-standing columns.
