Palazzo Tanagli

Palazzo Tanagli stands in Florence’s historic centre on Borgo degli Albizi, a street lined with medieval buildings. Built in the 15th century for the Tanagli family, it was later enlarged in the 16th century when three adjoining houses were joined into one grand residence. The Tanagli owned the palace until the early 17th century, after which it passed through several noble families before being bought by a private company in 1988. In 1959–60 the façade was repaired using cement to restore damaged stone cornices. Major restorations between 1995 and 2001 were led by architects Daniele Talozzi, Marco Forcelli and Marco Sacco, with further work completed in 2002–03. The palace is recognised as a national artistic heritage site, protected since 1914. Its entrance features a late-19th-century portal and gate, while inside a small courtyard holds faded frescoes attributed to Baldassarre Franceschini. A large Medici-della Rovere coat of arms is painted above the arms with the motto ‘Per queste, con queste’. The first floor rooms display 17th-century stuccoes and frescoes, and the façade shows two windows from different periods: one from the early 20th century and another from the 18th–19th centuries leading to a side entrance. Visitors find a quiet courtyard with remnants of Renaissance artworks and a grand heraldic emblem linking the palace to Medici and della Rovere patrons. The façade’s contrasting windows tell the story of gradual change over centuries. Inside, the restored rooms reveal layers of Baroque decoration beneath later alterations. The building remains a well-preserved example of Florentine Renaissance architecture in a lively but unspoilt street setting.
