Stadtmuseum Halle

The Stadtmuseum Halle stands in the heart of Halle (Saale), tracing the city’s past from its earliest days to the present. Its main site is the Christian-Wolff-Haus on Grosse Märkerstrasse, a Renaissance building where philosopher Christian Wolff lived and taught in the 18th century. The museum also runs branches in the Oberburg Giebichenstein, the Roter Turm, the Hausmannstürme of the Marktkirche, and the Leipziger Turm, each telling part of the city’s story. The museum is worth visiting for its clear focus on Halle’s social and cultural development. The permanent exhibition in the Christian-Wolff-Haus explores the 18th century, when Halle became a centre of Enlightenment thought under Wolff’s influence. In the former printing works next door, visitors can follow the city’s history through interactive displays covering settlement, migration, and local landmarks. Inside the Christian-Wolff-Haus, the staircase and painted ceilings show the building’s Renaissance origins. The printing museum next door displays original presses and an installation on the language of printers. Up in the Hausmannstürme, 225 steps lead to wide views over the city, while the Roter Turm and Leipziger Turm offer further vantage points and reminders of Halle’s medieval defences.
