University of Kent

The University of Kent sits on 300 acres of parkland just outside Canterbury, with views across to the World Heritage Site of Canterbury Cathedral. The main campus straddles the old boundary between Canterbury city and Kent county, a reminder of its collegiate origins in the 1960s. Four of the original colleges—Darwin, Eliot, Keynes and Rutherford—still stand among later additions such as Woolf and Turing. A tunnel collapse in 1974 damaged part of the Cornwallis Building, which had to be rebuilt. The campus also hosts the Jarman School of Arts, the Colyer-Fergusson Music Building and the Sibson complex for maths and business. Two Nobel laureates in literature studied here: Kazuo Ishiguro and Abdulrazak Gurnah. The university runs a campus in Medway and postgraduate centres in Paris, Rome and Athens. It collaborates with local colleges and, through Universities at Medway, shares facilities with the University of Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church University. In 2023 students voted to switch all catering to plant-based options, following similar moves elsewhere. Visitors walk past modern teaching blocks and landscaped lawns dotted with mature trees. The Templeman Library was extended and refurbished between 2013 and 2017, while Liberty Quays provides extra accommodation at the Medway campus. The Cornwallis Building’s rebuilt wing shows where subsidence once forced repairs. From the hilltop site the spires of Canterbury Cathedral rise above the treetops, linking the university’s present to its historic setting.
