Glen Moray distillery

Glen Moray is a Speyside distillery producing single malt Scotch whisky. It stands beside the River Lossie in Elgin, Moray, where a brewery once operated under the name West Brewery. The distillery began production in September 1897 with two stills. After a fire and rebuilding at Aberlour, Glen Moray closed in 1910. In the 1920s the MacDonald and Muir families bought the site and added two more stills in 1958. Today it is owned by La Martiniquaise and has grown to house six spirit stills and four wash stills. The distillery supplies malt for blends such as Cutty Sark and Label 5. Its annual capacity has risen from two million litres to eight and a half million litres through successive expansions. In 2012 the site produced three and a third million litres, then five and a half million by 2016. Recent upgrades completed in 2023 brought the total to eight and a half million litres. Awards include World Whiskies Awards victories for the 1994 Sherry Cask Finish and Phoenix Rising. Visitors find a modern visitor centre offering tours and tastings year round. The distillery sits within Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail alongside six other Speyside distilleries. The surrounding area includes the historic Dallas Dhu, now a museum, and the Speyside Cooperage. Views across the River Lossie and the distillery’s whitewashed buildings complete the scene.
