Schloss Gröningen

Schloss Gröningen stands four storeys high in the Gröningen district of Satteldorf, a village in the Schwäbisch Hall district of Baden-Württemberg. The building is a plain plaster structure with sandstone detailing, built between 1611 and 1627 by Hans Philipp von Crailsheim and his wife Margarethe von Berlichingen after they acquired the Gröningen estate. For many years the castle remained largely unoccupied, but by the late 18th century it passed by inheritance to the Seckendorff family, who established a small court with servants, gardeners and huntsmen. In 1865 the property was sold to Leonhard Keller, who opened a shop and inn inside the building. After his bankruptcy in 1879 the castle was bought by Georg Kraft, who transferred it to his daughter Katharina and her husband Georg Frank, who continued running the inn and store. The Franks kept the business going until Katharina Frank had to give up the licence after her husband’s early death. The inn was then leased and later sold in 1903 to Wilhelm Wacker and his wife, who reopened it as an inn with a shop in 1904. Today the castle houses a restaurant with a beer garden on the ground floor and business offices above. Private living quarters occupy part of the building, so the interior is not open to visitors. Outside, the castle’s sandstone façade still shows the Renaissance style of the early 17th century. The surrounding village of Gröningen lies in gentle countryside near Satteldorf, offering quiet lanes and distant views across the Hohenlohe plain. The beer garden behind the castle provides a sheltered spot to sit and drink, while the ground-floor rooms of the inn contain displays of old photographs and documents recalling the building’s long history as a local meeting place.
