St Mary's Church, Newnham Murren

St Mary’s Church stands at the end of a farm track in the small hamlet of Newnham Murren, near Crowmarsh in Oxfordshire. It overlooks the River Thames and lies close to the Ridgeway, a long-distance path used for centuries. The building is a Grade II* listed structure, recognised for its historic importance and placed under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Dating back to the 12th century, the church has seen additions in the 13th century and later restorations. A 19th-century porch and bellcote were added during its working life, before it was declared redundant in 1973. The church’s architecture reflects its long history, with walls built of flint and stone dressings under a tiled roof. Inside, the nave and chancel are separated by a Norman-style arch, and a squint allows views from the aisle into the chancel. The east window, added in the 19th century, features three lights and plate tracery. Traces of medieval work remain in the roof and limewashed walls, while a Jacobean pulpit and communion table survived the 1849 restoration. A 16th-century monumental brass is mounted on the aisle wall, and a piscina and double aumbry are set into the chancel’s masonry. Visitors approach along the farm track to find a quiet, unspoilt building with simple Norman doorways and small lancet windows. The stained glass in the windows catches the light, and the interior’s plain limewash contrasts with the medieval roof timbers. The Thames valley spreads out beyond the churchyard, linking the site to the wider landscape. The church stands as a quiet witness to centuries of worship and change, its modest scale and preserved fittings offering a glimpse of rural religious life from the Middle Ages onward.
