Burg Erenstein

Burg Erenstein, also called Ernstein, was a medieval spur castle near Züttlingen, a district of Möckmühl in northern Baden-Württemberg. It stood on a narrow ridge 255 metres above sea level, rising above the Jagst valley and the Ernsteinbach stream. The site is now a wooded hilltop with a clearly visible neck ditch and scattered remains of walls and a tower base. The castle belonged to a lower-noble family that took its name from the site and later owed service to the lords of Dürn and then the lords of Weinsberg. First recorded in 1258, the Ernsteiner family held lands in Züttlingen, Schlierstadt, Schefflenz, Helmbund and nearby villages. After the Ernstein line died out around 1400, the castle passed through marriage to the lords of Helmstatt and then the Rüdt von Bödigheim, who sold it in 1443 to Konrad von Weinsberg. Written records end soon after, and the castle may have been destroyed during the 1449 war between towns. Today the hilltop shows the outline of the former stronghold. Visitors walk through the upper slope woodland and see the remaining stonework of the tower and walls. The deep neck ditch still marks the entrance, while the surrounding valleys of the Jagst and Ernsteinbach frame the site. The ruins stand quietly in the forest, offering a glimpse of the region’s medieval past.
