St Mary Magdalene's Church, Bexhill-on-Sea

St Mary Magdalene’s is a Roman Catholic parish church in the centre of Bexhill-on-Sea, standing on the corner of Sea Road and Magdalen Road opposite the railway station. Designed by Arthur Young in the Gothic Revival style, it was completed in 1907 after a small church and school had operated on the site since 1893. The building is Grade II listed and dedicated to Mary Magdalene, a follower of Jesus. The church is worth visiting for its architecture and the art it contains. Arthur Young, a convert to Catholicism, designed not only this church but also churches in Aldeburgh and Harrow. Inside hangs a painting of the Crucifixion by August Neven du Mont, and a war memorial records the name of Awdry Vaucour. The church was consecrated in 1913, marking its place in the town’s religious life. Visitors find a spacious interior with pointed arches and stained glass typical of the Gothic Revival style. The war memorial stands near the entrance, and the Crucifixion painting draws attention in the nave. The church also serves two nearby congregations, Our Lady of the Rosary in Sidley and St Martha’s in Little Common, linking the town’s Catholic communities.
