Wedderburn Castle

Wedderburn Castle stands in the rolling hills of Berwickshire, near the market town of Duns. Built in the 18th century by the Adam brothers, it replaced an older tower house from the 15th century. The castle’s three-storey elevations follow the Adam style, with battlements and a rectangular courtyard hidden inside. Only a heraldic panel and part of the old tower remain today. The grounds are recognised as a designed landscape in Scotland. The castle has been the seat of the Home of Wedderburn family for centuries. The Homes acquired the barony in the 15th century after it passed from the Earls of Douglas. For nearly a century, from 1898 to 1973, the Arbuthnots leased the estate. The current owners are David Home Miller and Catherine Macdonald-Home. Visitors approach through the Lion Gate of 1794, designed by John Plaw, along a long drive past the 18th-century stables. The stables now serve as an events venue, arranged around a square court. Inside, a hall with a double staircase leads to a long gallery connecting the drawing room and dining room. The drawing room features a Carrara marble chimneypiece by Piranesi. The ballroom and morning room lie beyond the staircase, while the kitchen and further bedrooms occupy the ground floor.
