Südschwäbisches Archäologiemuseum Mindelheim

The Südschwäbisches Archäologiemuseum stands in Mindelheim, a town in Swabia, Bavaria. It occupies the former Jesuit college, a building that has housed cultural collections since 1994. The museum focuses on the settlement and cultural history of southern Swabia from the Ice Age to the early Middle Ages. Artefacts come from the districts of Ober-, Unter- and Ostallgäu, with additional finds from nearby Upper Bavaria. Exhibits are arranged in chronological order to show how life changed over millennia. The collection’s highlights include items from the prehistoric settlement at Pestenacker, part of the Altheim culture. Visitors can also see objects from the early Roman settlement on Auerberg and rich grave goods from an Alamanni burial ground near Mindelheim. Research from recent decades has added new insights that shape the displays. The museum works closely with the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection in Munich. Together they preserve and interpret evidence of the region’s past. Inside, the museum presents tools, pottery and jewellery in glass cases along wide corridors. Large maps mark where each find was discovered. A central room shows how people lived during different ages, with reconstructions of houses and workshops. Outside, the old college courtyard offers a quiet place to pause. The building itself, with its arched windows and stone doorways, adds to the sense of stepping back in time.
