Burgruine Zeiselberg

The ruins of Zeiselberg Castle stand on a hill above the village of the same name in the Magdalensberg municipality of Carinthia. Built in the 13th century, the small medieval stronghold lasted only a few decades before being destroyed in 1293. Recent excavations have cleared parts of the site and rebuilt sections using original materials. The castle’s remains reveal a compact layout with a defensive ditch and outer works. A two-room great hall and service buildings surround a small courtyard reached through the eastern gate. The eight-metre-high keep has been rebuilt, and traces of a forge, cistern and chapel survive. Artefacts found on site include horseshoes, belt buckles, crossbow bolts and an alembic, offering clear evidence of daily life in the late 13th century. Visitors walk along the restored walls and through the gate into the courtyard. The keep’s masonry stands above the rest of the ruins, while the chapel’s steps and the forge’s foundations remain visible. Metal and pottery fragments lie in display cases, showing how little the site has changed since its sudden abandonment. The hilltop offers wide views over the surrounding countryside.
