Münsterhof in Dreisen

Münsterdreisen lies on the banks of the Pfrimm between the villages of Dreisen and Standenbühl in the Donnersbergkreis of Rheinland-Pfalz. Once a Benedictine nunnery founded in 868 by Duke Nanthar and his wife Kunigunde, it later became an Augustinian house in the 11th century. In 1144 Duke Friedrich II of Swabia, with help from his kinsman Count Ludwig III of Arnstein, turned it into a Premonstratensian monastery and brought in canons from Arnstein. King Konrad III confirmed its rights and made new gifts, marking the start of its most important period. The community ended in the 14th century, and the buildings were destroyed during the Peasants’ War of 1525. The monastery’s history is recorded in a manuscript now in the British Library. Copied about 1150 by eight nuns for the ‘lords of Münsterdreisen’, it contains the Etymologiae of Bishop Isidor of Seville. A fine Gothic sacrament house, built around 1400, once stood in the abbey church. After the monastery’s dissolution in 1553 its stones were reused, and the sacrament house was later found in the cellar of the present Münsterhof. Its open pointed arch and painted rib-vault with a rose-shaped keystone show how the Blessed Sacrament was exposed for worship. Today the Münsterhof farm occupies the site. Visitors can still see the sacrament house in the wall of the old building, its delicate miniature architecture intact. Nearby Steinbach am Donnersberg has a 15th-century Protestant church whose foundation was laid by Abbot Johann of Münsterdreisen. A Gothic memorial stone there recalls the arrival of a revered image of the Virgin. The quiet fields and gentle river valley preserve the memory of a place where medieval faith and learning once flourished.
