Schloss Partenstein

Schloss Partenstein stands above the Große Mühl in the village of Partenstein, a district of Kirchberg ob der Donau in Upper Austria’s Rohrbach district. The site began as a medieval fortress, first mentioned in 1262 when Bishop Otto of Passau pledged it as part of Kunigunde von Goldeck’s dowry. Over the centuries the castle passed through the hands of the Harrach family, local caretakers and bishops until, by 1556, only a single resident craftsman remained. A 1674 engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer already shows the main tower and a few roofless walls, marking the ruin’s early decline. The ruin’s stone was later reused, so little of the original layout survives today. A short stretch of the eastern tower wall still stands, while the adjoining corner building may once have served as a storeroom. An old cistern supplies water, but the surrounding ring wall has vanished. In 1919 the Upper Austrian power company bought the site to build the Partenstein reservoir, completed in 1924. The plant manager, Herr Schlögl, opened a small local museum in the castle house in 1957 before the whole property passed into private ownership. Visitors today find a quiet hilltop above the reservoir’s water. The remaining masonry offers a glimpse of medieval life, while the reservoir below reflects the surrounding hills. The museum once displayed tools and photographs of the area’s history. The path to the site winds through woodland, ending at the ruins where only the tower stub and cistern remain visible. The landscape combines the stillness of the water with the silence of the abandoned fortress.
