Zugspitzeck

The Zugspitzeck is a jagged ridge peak standing 1.2 kilometres southwest of the Zugspitze on the border between Germany and Austria. It rises as part of the Zugspitzkamm, a chain of summits that forms the north-western corner of the Zugspitz massif. To its south-east the ridge continues over the Schneefernerscharte saddle to the higher Schneefernerkopf. The northern Schneeferner glacier lies directly below the steep northern face of the Zugspitzeck. The peak is recognised by mountaineers as a striking example of the Wetterstein range’s dramatic topography. Its position on the frontier means the summit straddles two countries, offering clear views along the entire ridge. The contrast between the glacier below and the airy crest above makes the site a favourite among climbers tackling the Zugspitzkamm traverse. Visitors who reach the ridge find themselves on a narrow crest with drops on either side into the upper valleys. The views stretch north to the Wetterstein peaks and south across the Inn valley into Austria. The austere beauty of the limestone walls and the presence of the remaining ice of the northern Schneeferner complete the alpine scene.
