Salzkopf

The Salzkopf stands in the Binger Wald, a forested ridge in Rheinland-Pfalz. It reaches 627.6 m and is the highest point in Mainz-Bingen district. The summit lies within Weiler bei Bingen’s municipal boundary, about 6.4 km north-west of Waldalgesheim. The landscape falls away northwards into the Soonwald and eastwards toward the Rheinhessisches Hügelland. Two protected areas cover the hill: a large landscape conservation zone and a smaller European habitat site. A 24 m steel tower on the summit offers wide views across the Hunsrück, the Middle Rhine Valley and the Rhine-Hessian hills. Two broadcasting masts stand south-west of the top, one 120 m away and another 500 m further. The E8 long-distance trail crosses the ridge, and signed paths lead to viewpoints such as the Siebenburgenblick and the Kandrich. From the Lauschhütte forest inn the climb is roughly 800 m through beech and spruce woods. Two aviation memorials mark tragic crashes on the slopes. In 1964 a Canadian pilot lost control of his F-86 Sabre in fog and struck the trees; a simple cross now stands at the impact point. In 1983 a Piper PA-28 flown by a local instructor crashed in high wind, killing all four occupants; a second cross records the accident without names. The forest paths remain quiet, giving walkers a place to remember as well as to look out over the surrounding valleys.
