St Denys' Church, Sleaford

St Denys’ Church stands in the centre of Sleaford, a Lincolnshire market town beside the River Slea. Its oldest parts are the late 12th-century tower and broach spire, one of England’s earliest, while the aisles, nave and north transept were added in the 14th century. The church was rebuilt after lightning struck the spire in 1884 and the north aisle was remodelled in 1853. It remains an active parish church and is recognised as a Grade I listed building of exceptional interest. Architectural historians Sir Nikolaus Pevsner and John Harris praised its Decorated Gothic style and the masons’ inventiveness. The tracery of its windows has drawn particular admiration from writers such as Simon Jenkins. The church’s interior holds a medieval rood screen and a communion rail, possibly by Sir Christopher Wren, along with a ring of eight bells cast in 1796. Two altar tombs commemorate members of the Carre family, who were lords of the manor in the 17th century. The building is constructed from Ancaster stone under a lead roof. The tower faces the market place, marking the heart of the town. A chantry chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was founded in 1271 by merchants Thomas Blount and John de Bucham. Their chaplain’s house, once in the churchyard, later became the vicarage. Visitors enter through the tower into a spacious nave with Decorated Gothic arcades. The north aisle contains the chantry chapel, its walls lined with medieval fabric. The rood screen divides the nave from the chancel, where the communion rail stands. The eight bells hang in the tower, rung for services and special occasions. Outside, the churchyard holds the former vicarage and several old gravestones. The market place beside the tower hosts weekly markets, linking the church to the daily life of the town.
