St Mary le Port Church, Bristol

St Mary le Port is a ruined parish church in the centre of Bristol. It stands in Castle Park on what remains of Mary le Port Street. The church was founded in Saxon times, with archaeological evidence and pottery confirming its early origins. It was rebuilt and enlarged between the 11th and 16th centuries. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, it became a popular centre for evangelical, Protestant, and Calvinist teaching within Anglicanism. The church was bombed in the Second World War on 24 November 1940 during the Bristol Blitz. The church’s tower, dating from the 15th century, is a Grade II listed building and a scheduled monument. John Piper painted an evocative picture of the bombed church, which later appeared on a British commemorative stamp. The tower is surrounded by modernist buildings that were once occupied by the Norwich Union and the Bank of England. These buildings became semi-derelict by the 2020s and are now proposed for redevelopment. After the bombing, the congregation moved to St John on the Wall Church, where they remained until the building was closed in 1984. Visitors to Castle Park can see the remaining 15th-century tower of St Mary le Port. The tower stands as a quiet reminder of the church’s past, surrounded by the modernist structures that now frame it. Some parish records and archive material, including baptism, marriage, and burial registers, are held at Bristol Archives. The tower’s presence adds a historical contrast to the surrounding area, which has seen significant changes over the centuries. The site offers a glimpse into Bristol’s layered history, from its Saxon origins to its wartime scars and modern redevelopment.
