Pfarrkirche hl. Nikolaus, Neumarkt am Wallersee

The Nikolauskirche in Neumarkt stands on the western edge of the town centre where the Steinbach and Statzenbach streams meet to form the Wallerbach. It sits within an earthen rampart built in 1638–39, and its early-baroque gateway tower is still visible in the eastern wall. The present hall church dates mainly from 1887–88, though its south tower preserves 18th-century forms. The church is worth visiting for its layered history and the craftsmen who shaped it. A church is first recorded in 1389, enlarged in the 1720s, rebuilt after a fire in 1887, and restored twice in the 20th century. Josef Kepplinger carved the three neo-renaissance altars in 1888, and the organ case of 1888 was reused by Dreher & Reinisch in 1949. Inside, the square nave rises to a shallow vault on giant pilasters. The west gallery still shows traces of the former three-aisled arrangement. The high altar shows the bishop saint Nikolaus with a crown of Mary above, flanked by Lawrence and Catherine. A carved Man of Sorrows from the early 1700s and a modern Saint Leonhard stand near the side altars. The south tower’s round-headed sound openings and pyramid cap can be seen from the churchyard.
