Schloss Oßweil

Schloss Oßweil stands in the Oßweil district of Ludwigsburg, a town in the Stuttgart region. It began as a stone house built around 1250 and grew into a moated castle with a drawbridge. The local noble family, the Lords of Oßweil, later passed it to the Lords of Kaltental from nearby Aldingen. In the 15th and 16th centuries the Kaltentals transformed it into a Renaissance palace, adding a half-timbered wing in 1584–85 and a small turret to the tower in 1566. The palace’s most striking feature is its preserved courtyard gate from 1595, which replaced the old drawbridge. A stone bridge now spans the former moat, though the water-filled ditch disappeared at the end of the 19th century. The Nothaft family bought the building in 1621, then the Bidembachs in 1646, and in 1748 Duke Carl Eugen turned part of it into a Rococo lovers’ parlour. After changing hands several more times, the village council purchased the palace in 1869 and used it as a town hall until Oßweil joined Ludwigsburg in 1922. Today the Evangelical Castle Kindergarten occupies the main rooms, while local clubs meet in other parts of the building. The half-timbered wing and the tower with its turret still rise above the quiet square. The old courtyard gate and the stone bridge recall the days when water surrounded the fortress. Visitors can walk around the outside and glimpse the interior through the windows, seeing traces of its centuries as a noble residence, ducal retreat and village hall.
