Nidderdale

Nidderdale lies in North Yorkshire, a broad valley cut by the River Nidd. It forms part of the Pennines and is protected as the Nidderdale National Landscape, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty since 1994. The dale stretches from Great Whernside, its highest point at 704 metres, down past the market town of Pateley Bridge. Smaller villages such as Lofthouse, Middlesmoor and Kettlesing dot the hillsides above and below the town. The landscape includes side valleys like the Washburn Valley and lower Wharfedale, with Jervaulx Abbey standing in Wensleydale nearby. The dale’s protected status recognises its sweeping moorland, limestone scars and wooded riverbanks. Great Whernside and surrounding fells offer long walks across open heather moor. Below, the River Nidd winds through meadows and past limestone quarries, its waters used for fishing and canoeing. The Nidderdale Omnibus first ran in 1849, linking Pateley Bridge to the railway at Nidd Bridge, while the 24 bus still follows the same route today. Scenes from the 2020 television series All Creatures Great and Small were filmed on roads above Pateley Bridge. Visitors find Pateley Bridge with its cobbled streets and stone buildings set beside the river. Footpaths climb to quiet villages like Lofthouse and Middlesmoor, where stone barns and drystone walls mark the farming landscape. The dale’s wide skies and rolling hills stretch away to distant fells, while the river’s gentle flow can be heard along its banks. Signposted trails lead to viewpoints over the valley and down to the river’s edge, where anglers cast lines and canoeists prepare for the water. The area’s quiet lanes invite cycling, and old railway routes now form paths for walkers and riders.
