The Schwarzkogel is a 1,554-metre peak in the Reichraminger Hintergebirge range of Upper Austria. It forms part of a west–east ridge that rises gently from the Spitzenbergriedel to the Tannschwärze, the more frequently climbed summit. The ridge also includes the Hieflerstutzen, with a broad saddle linking it to the Kampermauer further south. The western flank drops into a valley containing the Spitzenbergalm and the Hengstpasshöhe, while the southern slopes fall away to the Menaueralm. The ground here is marked by brown loam soils and wide erosion gullies that cut back into the limestone.

The mountain’s open grasslands support hardy alpine plants. Nardus stricta grass dominates the poorer soils on the western slopes, accompanied by mountain everlasting and alpine coltsfoot. Rare orchids such as the green bog orchid and the elder-flowered marsh orchid grow among them. Above the pastures, the limestone bedrock shows signs of moderate karstification, creating steep scree chutes that channel water down the flanks. These features shape the landscape seen from the summit ridge.

Walkers reach the top by following an unmarked route from the Hengstpasshöhe across the Spitzenbergriedel and up the western flank. The broad summit offers wide views over the Reichraminger Hintergebirge, the Sengsengebirge and the Haller Mauern. In winter the same slopes attract ski tourers and snowshoe hikers seeking open terrain away from groomed pistes. The ridge’s gentle contours make it a reliable choice when higher peaks are snowbound.
