Toter Mann

The Toter Mann stands 480.3 m above sea level near Friedewald in the Seulingswald range. It is the highest natural hill in this upland and marks the southernmost spur of the Fulda-Werra Uplands. The summit lies 2.5 km north of Friedewald within the town’s boundary. The hill’s slopes stretch into several nearby villages: Kathus to the southwest, Meckbach to the west, and Ronshausen to the northeast. Small tributaries of the Fulda river rise on these slopes, including the Meckbach, Ulfe, Breitenbach, and Breitzbach. The Seulingswald is recognised as a natural region within the East Hesse Highlands. The hill belongs to the subunit Solztrotten and Seulingswald, part of the Fulda-Werra Uplands. Its position links the upland with the broader landscape shaped by the Fulda and Werra rivers. The varied slopes support feeder streams that flow into these rivers, shaping the local water network. The hill’s location also places it close to the boundary between different municipal areas. Visitors reach the summit through quiet woodland paths that cross the Seulingswald. The hilltop offers open views over the surrounding countryside and the Fulda-Werra Uplands. The slopes are covered in mixed forest, with clearings where small streams appear. The area is peaceful, with few signs of modern development, giving a sense of the upland’s natural character. The streams and valleys around the hill provide gentle walking routes for those exploring the region.
