Church of All Saints

All Saints’ Church stands in the village of Breadsall, Derbyshire, as a Grade I listed parish church of the Church of England. Built in the 12th century, it carries later medieval additions from the 13th and 14th centuries. The building was restored twice in the 19th century by diocesan architect Frederick Josias Robinson, who rebuilt the chancel arch, re-roofed the nave and removed layers of plaster to reveal the original stonework. In 1914 a fire started by suffragettes gutted the interior, leaving only the tower and spire standing and destroying every window. Architect W. D. Caröe and builders Cornish and Gaymer led the careful reconstruction, reopening the church in 1916. The physician Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin, lies buried in the churchyard. The church’s interior holds a rare record of local craftsmanship. Alexander Buckingham installed a pipe organ in 1834, later altered by Wadsworth, and a 1914 specification survives in the National Pipe Organ Register. After the fire the original organ was lost, and an electronic instrument now serves the congregation. The walls still show the scars of the 1914 blaze, while the exposed medieval stonework tells of Robinson’s 19th-century uncovering. Erasmus Darwin’s simple grave marker lies outside, marking the resting place of a key figure in the Midlands Enlightenment. Visitors enter through the sturdy 12th-century doorway into a nave that still carries Robinson’s new roof timbers. The rebuilt chancel arch frames the sanctuary, and the tower’s spire rises above the quiet Derbyshire lanes. The churchyard contains yews and limes older than the recorded fires, and the headstone of Erasmus Darwin stands among them. The village lanes around Breadsall lead past stone cottages and open fields, offering a quiet walk after the stillness inside the church.
