Pfarrkirche Hl Radegundis, Hohenfeld

The Roman Catholic parish church of Hohenfeld stands on a terrace above Schloss Pöckstein in the municipality of Straßburg, Carinthia. It is dedicated to Saint Radegundis and protected as a listed monument. The building overlooks the valley of the Gurk, a tributary of the Drava. The church was founded in 1043 as a proprietary church by Saint Hemma. It later passed to Gurk Abbey and then to the Diocese of Gurk. Hohenfeld became a parish in its own right in 1249. In 1945 a bomb aimed at the nearby Gurk bridge struck the church and caused damage. The present structure is mainly Romanesque, with later Gothic and Baroque additions. The nave has a renewed wooden ceiling and a west gallery from the 19th century. The choir is rectangular and capped by an 18th-century Baroque cloister vault. A late-Gothic portal leads to the sacristy, which is rib-vaulted. The high altar dates from about 1740 and features a painting of Saint Radegundis by Josef Ferdinand Fromiller. A late-Gothic font and several side altars with Baroque and early-19th-century works complete the furnishings.
