Villa Liebenstein (Bregenz)

The Musikschule Bregenz sits in the Villa Liebenstein, a late-19th-century villa on a quiet street in Bregenz. The villa was built for Gustav Adolf von Liebenstein and later became a private commercial school run by Alwin Hauser. At the start of the 20th century the building changed hands several times until the Schoeller family took ownership in 1910. The villa’s history reflects Bregenz’s changing needs: after the Second World War it served the French occupation, then housed a spinning-mill office. Since 1982 the city has used it as a music school, offering lessons for all ages. Inside, visitors find classrooms for strings, woodwind and percussion, a recital hall with polished parquet, and corridors lined with pupils’ practice schedules. The villa’s original stucco ceilings and tall windows give the rooms a calm, classical atmosphere. Outside, a small garden leads to the shore of Lake Constance, where students sometimes play duets on summer evenings.
