Schloss Atzenzell

Schloss Atzenzell is a protected historic building in the village of Atzenzell, part of the municipality of Traitsching in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. The site includes both a listed monument and an archaeological site with medieval and early modern traces. The earliest record of the place dates from between 1160 and 1170, when it appeared as Aeceliniscelle in the traditions of Reichenbach Abbey. The castle’s origins lie in a group of farmsteads rather than a fortress. By the late 15th century a small stately home stood on the site, built by the Stöckl family. Over the centuries it passed through many noble and bourgeois hands, including the Manteuffels, the Hautzenbergs and the Grauvogls. After secularisation it became a refuge for displaced persons after the Second World War. Today the main building is a three-storey structure with a hipped roof, its medieval core still visible in the vaulted cellars. The first floor contains a vaulted passage and the former chapel, now divided into two rooms. The building serves as an inn, offering food and drink alongside its continuing agricultural use. The surrounding farmyard and outbuildings complete the picture of a working country estate.
