River Dochart

The River Dochart rises on Ben Lui in the southern Highlands and winds eastward through a narrow glen before reaching Loch Dochart. Near Killin it passes the Falls of Dochart, a short but dramatic cascade where water churns between grey rocks. The river then continues to Loch Tay, where some consider it the upper Tay itself. The Falls of Dochart are the river’s most striking feature, a tumbling stretch visible from the old bridge in Killin. Local legends say the falls once powered a mill that ground grain for the whole parish. Today the sound of rushing water mixes with the cries of herons fishing along the banks. Visitors can walk beside the river from Killin’s main street down to the falls. The path follows the old drove road used by cattle drovers centuries ago. On either side the glen rises in steep wooded slopes, while the water sparkles under shifting Highland light.
