Dunmore Pineapple

The Dunmore Pineapple stands in Dunmore Park near Airth in Stirlingshire, Scotland. It is a folly, a building made for decoration rather than use, built into a high retaining wall in a large walled garden. The garden covers about six acres on a gentle south-facing slope, sheltered by a 16-foot-high stone wall that runs the length of the north side. The wall was built to create a warmer microclimate for growing fruits and vegetables that would not survive the northern climate. The garden was part of the estate of the Earls of Dunmore, whose country mansion, Dunmore House, overlooks the grounds. The Pineapple is worth the journey for its unusual design and historical significance. Built in 1761 by John Murray, the 4th Earl of Dunmore, it originally housed a hothouse for growing pineapples, a rare and expensive fruit at the time. The building combines Palladian and Gothic styles, with a pineapple-shaped cupola atop an octagonal pavilion. The stone pineapple is a remarkably accurate depiction, with each leaf separately drained to prevent frost damage. The folly is often attributed to Sir William Chambers, who designed similar structures at Kew Gardens. Visitors find a harmonious blend of architecture and nature. The Pineapple’s stonework matches the portico, drawing the eye upwards in a single smooth motion. Inside the pavilion, curved walls create a circular room just large enough for a round table and chairs. The gardeners’ bothies, now holiday accommodation, offer south-facing windows overlooking the main lawn. The estate includes woodlands, a pond, and a crab-apple orchard, all open to the public year-round. The Pineapple remains one of the United Kingdom’s greatest follies, celebrated for its craftsmanship and eccentricity.
