The Reißhorn is a mountain in the Berchtesgaden Alps, standing at 2,412 metres. It lies close to the border between Germany and Austria, north-west of the Hochkönig and east of the Steinernes Meer. The peak rises above alpine meadows and rugged limestone cliffs that dominate the landscape.
Climbers value the Reißhorn for its dramatic north face and long ridges that test route-finding skills. The mountain’s isolation gives it a quiet presence despite its height. Local guides often mention the Reißhorn as a worthy challenge for experienced hikers. Its slopes feed streams that flow into the Salzach river system.
A steady path leads from the upper Matrashaus alpine hut to the summit ridge. The final climb follows a narrow crest with steep drops on either side. From the top, views stretch across the Hohe Tauern and the Steinernes Meer. On clear days the Dachstein massif appears in the distance. The descent offers glimpses of high alpine lakes below the cliffs.
