Saint Nicholas Church

The parish church of Fußach stands in the village centre of Fußach in the Bregenz district of Vorarlberg. It is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Nicholas and belongs to the Dornbirn deanery within the Diocese of Feldkirch. The building is protected as a historic monument. The church replaced an older structure that once stood in the cemetery at the heart of the village. After a major fire in 1854 destroyed the church and the parish house, a new tower was built in 1856. The present neo-Romanesque church was completed in 1863. In 1976 the building was demolished and rebuilt between 1976 and 1978 to designs by Leopold Ostertag and Leopold Kaufmann of the New Vorarlberg School of Architecture. The exterior is a broad structure under a hipped roof. The three-storey tower has cornices and a round-arched portal with a stepped gable. Above the portal is a niche containing a mid-19th-century statue of Saint Nicholas. Inside, the nave is a polygonal space with a tent-like timber ceiling. The organ on the gallery was built by Benedikt Klingler in 1868. Herbert Albrecht created the altar, ambo, font, sacrament stand, holy-water stoup and offertory box in 1978.
