Witley Court

Witley Court stands in Great Witley, Worcestershire, as the remains of an Italianate mansion built first for the Foleys in the 17th century. John Nash enlarged it in the early 19th century for Thomas Foley, 3rd Baron Foley, adding grand porticoes. The Earls of Dudley later remodelled the house in the mid-19th century under Samuel Daukes, creating one of the great palaces of Victorian and Edwardian England. The attached Church of St Michael and All Angels, with its baroque interior and hand-painted windows by Joshua Price, was also part of this transformation. The estate once featured landscaped parks and a relocated village to improve the view from the house. The house suffered a major fire in 1937 after decades of neglect by its owners. The ruins were later taken into state care in 1972 and have been stabilised to remain a spectacular sight. The Perseus and Andromeda Fountain, designed by William Andrews Nesfield and executed by James Forsyth, still stands restored by English Heritage. The church survived the fire and remains attached to the ruins, showing its baroque interior with panels by Antonio Bellucci. A 1967 music video by Procol Harum and a 2016 TV miniseries also featured the site when it was derelict. Visitors find a dramatic ruin of ashlar-clad walls and grand porticoes framed by overgrown gardens. The South Parterre has been restored, revealing Nesfield’s formal designs, while work continues on the East Parterre. The Perseus and Andromeda Fountain, now working again, dominates the centre of the garden with its sculpted figures. The church’s painted panels and stained glass add colour and detail to the scene. The contrast between the ruined mansion and the surviving fountain creates a striking impression of past grandeur.
