Saint Michael Church

The Catholic parish church of St Michael stands in Fischamend, a town in Lower Austria near the Leitha river. Built on a plateau once topped by medieval earthworks, the church crowns a small hill in the town centre. Its tall tower rises above a Gothic choir while the nave belongs to the early 18th-century Baroque period. A first church existed before 1074, and the parish was established around 1100.
The church’s interior was largely refashioned in the early 19th century in the Classical style. The high altar features Franz Anton Maulbertsch’s painting of the Last Supper, one of the artist’s major works. The organ, installed in 1728, still plays during services. After centuries under Passau’s bishops, the parish passed to the Archdiocese of Vienna in 1729.
Visitors step into a light, spacious nave with white walls and slender columns. The tower’s bells ring over the surrounding streets, and the plateau offers views across the town and toward the river. The churchyard holds simple gravestones, while the nearby parish house keeps records that reach back to the 12th century.
