Münster-Therme
The Münster-Therme is a public indoor swimming pool in Düsseldorf’s Pempelfort district. It sits in a quiet inner-city courtyard off Münsterstraße, reached through a narrow passage between two buildings. The original structure, built in 1902, was one of the city’s first public baths designed to improve hygiene in rapidly growing neighbourhoods. Its Art Nouveau interior survived wartime bombing in 1944 and was carefully restored in 2003, preserving much of the early 20th-century character. The building is now listed as a cultural monument for its architectural and social history. The pool offers a large main basin with depths from 0.85 to 2.90 metres and water treated by membrane-electrolysis instead of chlorine. A smaller outdoor thermal brine pool at 32 °C sits beside the main building, and 180 lockers serve swimmers on two levels. Sauna facilities and wellness courses complement the swimming areas. The windows were designed by artist Anja Quaschinski, adding natural light and visual interest. Between 2005 and 2007 the hall hosted concerts using the pool as a stage. Visitors find a calm urban retreat with a preserved Jugendstil atmosphere. The main hall combines historic detailing with modern technical upgrades. Outside, the warm brine pool provides a gentle contrast to the cooler air. The overall setting remains intimate despite its central location, offering a place for exercise, relaxation and cultural events.
