St Mary's Church, Stainburn

St Mary’s Church stands in the quiet village of Stainburn, North Yorkshire, on a gentle slope above farmland. Built in the 12th century as a chapel for Kirkby Overblow, it is one of the oldest buildings in the area. The church is made of local gritstone with a slate roof that slopes down from nave to chancel. A small porch shelters the round-arched doorway, and a two-arched bellcote marks the meeting of nave and chancel. Inside, the walls show the simple lines of Norman architecture, while the east window belongs to the Perpendicular style. The church is Grade I listed and has been cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust since 1977. In 1894 the architect C. Hodgson Fowler restored the building, re-roofing the nave, refitting the chancel and adding a vestry. He also relaid the grave slabs that line the floor. The font, pews and chancel arch survive from much earlier centuries, giving a clear view of how worship changed over time. The blocked doorway in the south chancel wall hints at past alterations. Visitors step into a single space divided by a Norman arch. The circular font stands near the entrance, its carved bowl worn by centuries of hands. Sixteenth- and seventeenth-century pews fill the nave, their benches worn smooth by generations of worshippers. On the north wall a two-light mullioned window lets in angled light, while the east window’s three lights frame the altar. Outside, the churchyard holds a few gravestones, their dates ranging from the 17th century to the 19th. The low chancel roof and the bellcote’s twin arches complete the scene, a quiet witness to eight hundred years of village life.
