Schloss Riglasreuth

Schloss Riglasreuth is a protected castle ruin in the village of Riglasreuth, part of Neusorg in the Upper Palatinate region. It sits on a lowland site where the old Eger road crossed the Fichtelnaab river in a wide loop. The castle began as a medieval fortress first mentioned in 1283 and later rebuilt after fires in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The site was owned by several noble families including the Mengersreuths, who held it for over a century until 1650. It later served as a royal forest office under King Ludwig II after being purchased in 1866. Archaeologists recognise buried foundations from the original medieval castle beneath the present structure. Today the castle appears as a two-storey stone building with a hipped roof and ten bat dormers. Inside, vaulted cellars have been uncovered and are being ventilated to prevent damp. The surrounding curtain wall still traces an irregular polygon, with the St Wolfgang Chapel rebuilt after the 1849 fire. Remains of former outbuildings line the old moat, and the whole complex stands within sight of the river loop.
