Brungershausen Castle

Burgstall Brungershausen stands on flat land west of the village of Brungershausen in Lahntal. The Warzenbach stream curves round the old site, with the Altehude field just east of the water. The whole area is still farmed as arable land and pasture. An 1845 map shows a marked boggy patch where the castle once stood. Traces of the former earthworks and stone walls remain visible in the fields. The site is worth visiting because it reveals the early history of a small medieval fortress. Archaeologists found a square tower base in 1992, confirming written records of the Brungershausen family in the 13th century. Excavations uncovered pottery from the 8th to 13th centuries, linking the site to the Carolingian and Ottonian periods. A student research group from Marburg University has mapped the layout using laser surveying and geophysics. Their work shows a stone tower surrounded by smaller stone buildings and defensive ditches. Visitors walk across open fields where the outlines of the old walls still show in the soil. The Warzenbach curves gently around the site, giving a sense of how the water once protected the castle. In dry weather the buried stones and ditches become clearer. The landscape is quiet, with only the sound of the stream and distant farm work. The place offers a direct glimpse into a vanished fortress from over a thousand years ago.
