Clare Hall

Clare Hall is a small graduate college of the University of Cambridge, set in quiet grounds west of the centre. Founded in 1966 by Clare College, it admits only postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and fellows. The college was created as an Institute of Advanced Study and has grown into a full constituent college while keeping its original purpose. It is a registered charity and one of the smallest colleges, with about 250 graduate students and 125 fellows. The ratio of fellows to students is the highest in Cambridge. Clare Hall is recognised for the number of Nobel laureates among its affiliates. The college maintains Cambridge traditions such as formal halls and the tutorial system. It was founded by Clare College to provide a social group for graduate students, research fellows and visiting fellows. The architect Ralph Erskine designed the early buildings, including common rooms, offices and apartments for visiting fellows. The first president, Brian Pippard, moved into the president’s house with his family in 1969. Visitors find a single society that mixes graduate students with distinguished fellows. The college has several common rooms, a dining room for formal meals, and a sports complex with a gym, pool and tennis court. Clare Hall West Court, a converted family home, offers further study bedrooms, a fitness centre and another swimming pool. College life includes seminars, lunchtime discussions and lecture series on human values. Art exhibitions, films and small concerts add to the academic and cultural life of the college.
