Jusi

Jusi is a volcanic residual standing in the Swabian Alb near Kirchheim unter Teck. It rises about 350 metres above the surrounding countryside. The mountain is an erosional outlier, separated from the main Alb escarpment by erosion. Only within 25 kilometres of Bad Urach are such volcanic residuals found. There are 355 of these residuals, but most are hard to recognise in the landscape. Their tuff pipes were only discovered using seismo-electric methods. The volcano was active between 17 and 16 million years ago. It is the largest of the group of volcanic residuals. The Jusi’s shape shows how erosion has shaped the land over millions of years. The mountain’s slopes are covered with meadows and small woods. Walkers often climb the paths that wind up the hillside. At the top, visitors find a broad plateau with panoramic views. The Swabian Alb stretches away to the south and west. On clear days, the Alps are visible in the distance. The summit area is marked by a trig point and a small shelter. The contrast between the volcanic rock and the surrounding limestone is striking. The Jusi stands as a quiet reminder of ancient geological forces.
