Parish and pilgrimage church Maria Ellend

Maria Ellend’s parish and pilgrimage church stands beside the main road in the village of Maria Ellend, a quiet settlement in the Bruck an der Leitha district of Lower Austria. The present building replaced an earlier church destroyed in the 17th century and was finished in 1770. A century later the façade was given its mosaic of the enthroned Virgin and Child and a secession-style tower helmet. The church has been protected as an official monument since the 20th century. The church’s simple exterior hides a single-nave interior focused on a 1770 high altar that frames a late-16th-century wooden Madonna. The altar canopy and plain pulpit date from the same period, while the entrance portal carries secession-style metal fittings. A low western annexe links to the two-storey parish house built around 1960. The surrounding cemetery and the parish priest’s house close off the west side of the churchyard. Visitors step from the road into a calm forecourt before the mosaic-fronted façade. Inside, the nave’s plain walls direct attention to the gilded altarpiece and the dark figure of the Madonna beneath its baroque canopy. The tower’s onion dome rises above the secession decorations, and the small western annexe offers a quiet space before the parish house garden. The whole ensemble remains a place of quiet devotion and simple architectural grace.
