Wiener Stadthalle

The Wiener Stadthalle is a large indoor complex in Vienna’s 15th district. Roland Rainer designed the original halls, built between 1953 and 1958 and later expanded in 1974, 1994 and 2006. The main hall is Austria’s biggest indoor arena, holding up to about 16,000 people. The complex now contains six main venues: two gymnasiums, an ice rink, a large arena, a small hall, an auditorium and a swimming pool. More than 350 events take place here each year, drawing around a million visitors. It has hosted major sporting events like the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1970 and the Ice Hockey World Championships in several years. The arena also stages the annual Erste Bank Open tennis tournament and shows such as Vienna Ice Revue and Holiday on Ice. In 2015 it hosted the Eurovision Song Contest, and in 2026 it will do so again. The halls are managed by different organisations, including the sports venues corporation and Die EisStadthalle for the ice rink. Inside, Hall D is the main arena, flexible enough for concerts, sports or large gatherings. Hall F, completed in 2006, seats up to 2,000 and has a foyer, restaurant and banquet hall. The ice rink in Hall C offers public skating and training for ice hockey and figure skating. The Stadthallenbad swimming pool complex was added in 1974 and expanded for the 2004 European Short Course Swimming Championships. The entire site includes administration buildings, workshops and a photovoltaic system on the roof.
