Minsmere River

The Minsmere River flows through Suffolk before reaching the North Sea at Minsmere. It begins where the River Yox meets at Yoxford, passing Middleton, Eastbridge and Minsmere along the way. The river runs south of the Minsmere RSPB reserve, shaping many of its wetland habitats. The original course, the Minsmere Old River, lies north of the Minsmere New Cut. This artificial channel was dug in 1812 and ends at Minsmere Sluice, a tidal gate that lets water flow into the sea. The valley was drained long ago for farming, leaving behind a network of dykes and grassland. Suffolk Wildlife Trust protects 20 hectares at Darsham Marshes between Yoxford and Eastbridge. Past Eastbridge, the land flattens into the Minsmere Level, a drained marsh with alluvial soil. To the south, grazing marshes provide winter shelter for waterfowl. To the north, flooded wetlands are managed by the RSPB for bitterns, marsh harriers and other birds. The area holds traces of Leiston Abbey, moved inland in 1363 after coastal flooding. Only a chapel remains, built after the move and used until 1536. Eastbridge Windpump once helped drain the Levels and is now kept in Stowmarket. The whole stretch is a Ramsar site, protecting rare wetland species and habitats.
