Kirche Raut
St. Josef in Raut is a small Roman Catholic church standing 1,243 metres above sea level. It sits south of the pilgrimage site Maria Luggau, in the village of Raut within Lesachtal. The church belongs to the parish of Maria Luggau and is dedicated to Saint Joseph. Built in 1805, it combines late Baroque and Classical styles. A wooden bell tower with a small onion dome crowns the west front. Inside, the building features three tall rectangular windows on each long side. The nave and the narrower choir are flat-ceilinged and joined by a straight-arched triumphal arch. A projecting stone gallery spans the west end. Wall paintings from 1808 by Christoph Brandstätter the Elder cover the interior. In the choir they show Christ at Emmaus, above the arch the Lamb of God, and in the nave the death of Saint Joseph. The historicising altar holds a picture of the church’s patron, Saint Joseph. Beside it stands a copy of the miraculous image from Maria Luggau. Opposite the church, the Hanslahof farmhouse displays 1816 murals of Saints Luke and Florian.
