Schloss Schmeilsdorf

Schloss Schmeilsdorf stands in the village of Schmeilsdorf, part of the Mainleus market in Upper Franconia, Bavaria. It sits beside the Zentbach stream, surrounded by water-filled moats and a park with old trees. The site lies about 1.5 kilometres northwest of Mainleus and roughly 4 kilometres east of the district town of Kulmbach. A simple three-storey rectangle, the present building replaced an earlier 14th-century knights’ seat. The last private owner left in 1847, leaving the house empty until modern restoration turned it into a multi-generational home. The house dates from about 1750 and shows the refined tastes of Friedrich Erdmann von Künsberg. The south front has a three-bay middle section with a balcony and shallow pediment above. Sandstone dressings mark the plain façades, and a mansard roof carries several dormers. A bridge with 18th- and 19th-century gate piers leads to the main entrance on the east side. Nearby stands the former chapel, built in the early 17th century of rough-hewn stone. The chapel’s north gable ends in a half-hipped roof, and above the east door an alliance coat of arms from 1603 records the builders, Georg and Ursula von Künsberg. A small octagonal turret with a curved cap now crowns the roof, though the building has served as a barn since the mid-19th century. Visitors walk past the moat and along the tree-lined approach to the bridge, then through the quiet village to reach the water-filled ditches and the plain but dignified front of the house.
