St. Giles (Regnitzlosau)

The St.-Aegidien-Kirche stands in Regnitzlosau, a village in Upper Franconia. It is an evangelical parish church dedicated to Saint Giles, one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The building is a simple Protestant aisle church with a tower at the east end. The church’s history goes back to a chapel built in the late 13th century. Major expansions in 1668–69 and 1701–05 gave it its present size. After neglect in the 19th and early 20th centuries, a thorough restoration in the 1930s saved the structure. A further renovation in 1972–75 refreshed both interior and exterior. Inside, visitors see a baroque pulpit-altar by Wolfgang Adam Knoll from 1743. The painted coffered ceiling has 105 panels, with work by Heinrich Andreas Lohe in 1672 and Nikolaus Walther in 1745. Left of the altar stands a wooden angel holding the baptismal bowl, carved by Knoll in 1745. The church also keeps three historic bells, the oldest dating from the 14th century.
