Roter Grat

The Rote Grat is a 3 099-metre peak on the border between Austria’s Tirol and Italy’s South Tyrol. The normal route starts at the Nürnberger Hütte and follows a gletscherfreie path over the Freiger or Rotgratscharte. Both options reach the summit ridge where UIAA grade I scrambling is needed, yet the entire way is marked and takes three or two-and-a-half hours. From the Teplitzer Hütte at 2 586 metres the route crosses the Wilden Freiger’s summit and the Freigerscharte. Another approach begins at the Becherhaus at 3 190 metres and also joins the same ridge. All paths share the same final scrambling section before the top. On the summit visitors find a narrow crest with views across the Stubai Alps. The surrounding peaks include the Zuckerhütl and the Wilder Freiger. The route’s exposure and the sense of height give a clear alpine feel without heavy climbing.
