Clanfield Preceptory

Clanfield Preceptory stands in the quiet Oxfordshire village of Clanfield. It was a small monastic grange run by the Knights Hospitaller in the 12th century. The preceptory served as a base for the order’s farming and fundraising work across southern England. Only earthworks and a low stone wall remain above ground today. Archaeologists recognise its foundations beneath the grassy mound. The site lies beside a minor road on the edge of Clanfield’s modern housing estates. The preceptory is worth the journey because it is one of the few Hospitaller commanderies still traceable in Oxfordshire. Records from the 1190s list Brother William as its preceptor. Excavations in 1998 uncovered a stone-lined cistern and fragments of 13th-century pottery. Its modest scale shows how the Hospitallers managed rural estates without grand abbeys. The site is now scheduled as an ancient monument. Visitors find a grassy mound with a low rubble wall marking the former cloister range. A shallow ditch runs around the mound, once part of the precinct boundary. Information boards explain the layout of the grange buildings. The surrounding fields are still farmed, giving a sense of the preceptory’s working countryside setting. A footpath crosses the site, allowing close inspection of the remains.
