Southampton City Art Gallery

Southampton City Art Gallery stands in the Civic Centre on Commercial Road. The building itself is a fine example of 1930s municipal architecture, designed to house a growing collection of art. It opened in 1939 after receiving funding from two major bequests, one from Robert Chipperfield and another from Frederick William Smith. The gallery suffered damage during the Second World War, which delayed its full reopening until 1946. Today it holds a Designated Collection, recognised as nationally important. Its art spans six centuries of European history, with more than 5,300 works in total. The gallery’s permanent collection includes notable pieces such as a 14th-century altarpiece by Allegretto Nuzi. It also features the Perseus series by Burne-Jones, paintings by the Camden Town Group and The London Group, and sculptures by Jacob Epstein, Auguste Rodin, Edgar Degas, and others. Recent work includes a £26,000 grant to digitise part of the collection. The gallery will close in February 2025 for roof repairs and heating upgrades. Inside, visitors find a sequence of rooms arranged to show the development of European art. The collection includes Italian panels, British paintings, and modern sculpture. Works by Henri Gaudier Brzeska, Richard Deacon, Tony Cragg, and Richard Long are on display. The building’s 1930s design provides a calm setting for viewing art from the Middle Ages to the present day.
