Miogliola

Miogliola is a small village in Piedmont, set on the left bank of the Erro stream where it marks the border with Liguria. The Erro flows into the Bormida further downstream. The village lies along the provincial road that links Mioglia to the Erro bridge, where it meets the old state road to Sassello. Miogliola includes the hamlets of Bergiavelli, Garbarini and Frascheto. The village was founded in the Middle Ages and first mentioned in 1223. Its parish church of San Lorenzo already existed under the diocese of Acqui at that time. The present church was built in 1710 and completed in 1819. In 1880 the first elementary school opened. A more convenient road to Mioglia was built in the 1930s, and electricity arrived in 1938. After the Second World War many residents moved to the Ligurian Riviera, especially Savona and Genoa. The main event is the annual August festival for the patron saint, San Lorenzo Martire. The stream and surrounding hills give the village a quiet, rural feel. The old church and scattered hamlets preserve the character of a place shaped by centuries of local life.
