South Woodford station stands in the London Borough of Redbridge, on the Central line between Snaresbrook and Woodford. It opened in 1856 as George Lane on the Eastern Counties Railway branch to Loughton. The station was renamed South Woodford (George Lane) in 1937 and simply South Woodford in 1947. It became part of the Central line in 1947 when services were extended from Leytonstone to Woodford. The original level crossing was replaced by a footbridge when the line was electrified.

The station now has two entrances on either side of the tracks and a footbridge that can be used without a ticket. Step-free access to both platforms was completed in 2019 after a ramp was added to the westbound side. In 2006 the station was renovated, including the installation of five new CCTV cameras in the underpass to improve security. The westbound platform was rebuilt after a fire and repainted in white, blue and orange.

South Woodford station is served by Central line trains every 3–7 minutes during the day. London Bus routes 179, W12, W13 and W14, and night route N55 stop nearby. The footbridge at the east end remains unpainted after the 2006 work.
